The retirement plan classifies members into groups based on their occupation, position or duties. It is possible for a member to hold positions throughout his or her career that are classified in more than one group. Middlesex County Retirement System members are classified as follows:
- Group 1: officials and general employees including clerical, administrative and technical workers, laborers, mechanics and all others not otherwise classified
- Group 2: certain statutory occupations, including ambulance attendants and licensed electricians employed as such by a municipality
- Group 4: public safety employees, such as police officers, firefighters, and certain employees of a municipal electric light department
A member’s Group Classification and membership date will determine the age factor that is used when calculating a member’s retirement allowance. For an estimate of the benefit percentage at which members will retire based on their age and years of service, refer to the Group Charts listed below.
Membership Established Prior to April 2, 2012
Membership Established On or After April 2, 2012
